How Long Does PVD Gold Plating Really Last?

Coaters and jewelry manufacturers converge on two to five years of daily wear for a good PVD gold finish, and longer on pieces you take off at night. That is years, not months. Electroplated gold at the same price usually goes first. No standard fixes those numbers, so treat the range as a working expectation rather than a promise. What sets it is not the gold. It is how the layer got there.

PVD in one sentence: metal vapor, laid down in a vacuum

PVD stands for physical vapor deposition. The piece goes into a sealed chamber, the air is pumped down to a hard vacuum, and a solid target metal is turned into vapor by heat or by ion bombardment. That vapor then condenses onto the piece, one atom at a time.

Two things happen here that do not happen in a plating tank. First, the surface is ion-etched before deposition, which strips oxides and contamination so the coating lands on clean metal. Second, the arriving particles carry real energy, so they pack into a dense film instead of settling as loose nodules. Coating engineers measure the result on a scratch test, in newtons of load before the film fails.

Electroplating is a wet electrochemical process at low energy. Ions drift to the surface and sit there. The film tends to come out more porous and uneven at the edges, and it holds on by much less.

Read that table sideways, not down. Gold filled carries far more gold than PVD. PVD is far harder. Those are two different claims, and neither one settles the other.

How long it really lasts, and what decides it

Two to five years of daily wear is the honest working range, and it comes from coaters and manufacturers rather than from any published test standard. Three variables move it.

Thickness. Decorative PVD on jewelry and watch parts is usually quoted somewhere between 0.1 and 1 micron. Volume fashion jewelry is often far thinner, with suppliers describing 0.03 to 0.08 micron as standard practice. A 0.08 micron layer outlasts a 0.03 micron layer, and neither one behaves like 0.5.

Substrate. A coating is only as stable as what sits underneath it. 304 stainless steel is nominally 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel, and that chromium builds a passive oxide film that reforms when scratched. Coat brass instead and the base can corrode under the film, then lift it from below. Same coating, different lifespan. This is also why stainless behaves differently from plated brass over time.

Wear pattern. A ring on a working hand meets more abrasion in a month than a necklace meets in a year. Rings are the hardest test in the box, which is why the base metal matters most there. Our Black Stone Signet Ring is a stainless piece with a gold tone PVD finish for exactly that reason.

What wears a PVD layer down

Four things, in order of how often they matter.

Abrasion. This is the real one. Inner ring bands, clasp contact points, anything that rubs against a desk or a dumbbell. Hardness buys time: titanium nitride PVD is commonly quoted between roughly 1800 and 2500 HV depending on the process, against a figure near 130 HV for soft 304 stainless. But hardness is not immunity. Friction wins on a long enough timeline.

Chemicals. Chlorine, bleach, ammonia and strong household cleaners attack coatings. So does a chlorinated pool every single day.

Perfume and alcohol sprays. Alcohol-based cleaners, colognes and lotions are widely reported to dull a finish over time. Nobody has put a number on it. Put them on first, then the jewelry.

Salt. Chlorides are the specific weak point of 304 stainless. Published guidance rates bare 304 for water in the low hundreds of milligrams of chloride per litre; seawater runs around 19,000. That does not mean one swim ruins a piece, because the coating sits between the steel and the water and the exposure is short. It does mean salt left to dry on the metal is the habit worth breaking. Rinse in fresh water afterwards and dry it.

Worth saying plainly, because "waterproof" gets thrown around: a shower, sweat or a swim is not what takes a gold tone PVD finish off a stainless piece. Abrasion is. Salt or chlorine left to dry and sit only adds to it.

The trap: "gold PVD" does not mean "contains gold"

This is the part almost nobody spells out.

PVD is a process, not a material. You can deposit real gold with it. You can also deposit titanium nitride or zirconium nitride, ceramic compounds that come out gold colored and contain no gold whatsoever. Both get sold as "gold PVD."

The nitrides are generally the harder and longer lasting of the two. But the phrase tells you nothing about gold content, and that is exactly the problem: a brand that lets you read gold into it is selling you a word.

US guidance is specific here. The FTC Jewelry Guides at 16 CFR 23.3(a) treat it as deceptive to misrepresent the presence of gold in a piece, or the karat fineness, thickness or manner of application of any gold plating or coating. Section 23.3(b)(1) gives the unqualified word "gold" as an example of a misleading description when the item is not fine 24 karat gold throughout. Section 23.3(c)(3) sets the electroplating thresholds: at least 10 karat fineness with a minimum thickness equivalent to 0.175 microns of fine gold to say "gold electroplate," and 2.5 microns for "heavy gold electroplate." Mechanically applied gold plate is governed separately by weight, at 1/40 of the metal in the article for "gold plate" and 1/20 for "gold filled." Section 23.10(b) even gives the layout version of the trick as an example: "gold" set large, "plated" set small.

The Guides are the Commission's stated thinking rather than a standalone rule, and enforcement runs through Section 5 of the FTC Act. That is not a loophole. It means the test is what a reasonable buyer takes away.

So when a cheap stainless chain is listed as "18K gold plated," treat it as a claim somebody should be able to document with an assay of the deposit.

Our own position is plain: a gold tone PVD finish over stainless steel. The color is the product. There is no gold content to discuss, so we do not claim one.

The question to ask a brand before you buy

One question does most of the work: what is the base metal, and how thick is the coating?

A brand coating stainless at half a micron will answer with numbers. A brand flashing brass at 0.05 microns will answer with adjectives. Three follow-ups:

  • Is it PVD or electroplating? The failure timelines are not close.
  • Is the gold color a gold deposit or a nitride? Either is fine. Vagueness is not.
  • What does the warranty replace, and for how long? A return window and a replacement policy are two separate promises. Check which one you are being offered.

How to spot a coating that is starting to go

PVD does not tarnish the way plating does. It abrades. So the signs are mechanical, not chemical.

Check the contact points first: the inside of a ring band, the back of a clasp, the underside of a pendant where it sits against a collarbone.

Early. A dull patch. The shine goes flat in one small area while the rest stays bright.

Then. A color shift. In daylight, that patch reads slightly gray or slightly pink against the gold tone around it.

Late. The base shows. A clean silver line along an edge, sharp against the color beside it. That is steel coming through, and it does not polish back. Polishing only removes more coating.

Here is the practical part. If the metal underneath is stainless, a worn coating is cosmetic. Austenitic stainless is corrosion resistant, it carries no copper to leave green marks on skin, and the piece keeps its shape. If the metal underneath is brass, a worn coating is the beginning of the end.
